Carlos Carvalhal is no longer the coach of Celta de Vigo, the club from the Spanish Football League announced this Saturday, thanking the Portuguese for his work and results over the past eight months.
“RC Celta and Carlos Carvalhal terminate their contractual relationship as first team coach. The club wishes to express its most sincere thanks to Carvalhal and his assistants for the professionalism and integrity they have shown since their arrival in Vigo last November. The statement was published on the official website of Spain.
The Portuguese coach signed a contract with the Galician club on November 2, which runs until 2024, at a time when the team was in 16th place in the Spanish league, just one point above the relegation zone.
In his first experience in Spanish football, the 57-year-old Carvalhal led Celta de Vigo to 13th place in La Liga, won by Barcelona this year.
“We wish the Portuguese coach the best of luck in his professional and personal future, and thank him for the work and dedication he has shown every day during these eight months,” concludes Celta.
This was the former centre-back’s fifth time as a manager outside of Portugal after spells in England (Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City), Turkey (Besiktas and Istanbul BB), Greece (Asteras Tripoli) and the Emirates. (“Al-Wahda”).
