Store, accumulate and not be able to throw away. A cycle that can take on a more serious shape and completely condition a person’s life. The accumulator designation is given to whoever stores items, regardless of their functionality, in the belief that they will come in handy again later.
In accordance with National Health Center (British National Health Service), hoarding is a non-linear condition that is difficult to treat and has a high relapse rate. Sometimes the level of accumulation is so severe that the accumulation of objects and/or rubbish eventually causes the normal movement of people in their homes. There have even been cases of people dying buried under their own rubbish.
Accumulation is often due to negligence
In an interview with Morning Post, Psychiatrist Marcelo Feio explained that “the diagnosis of hoarding does not manifest itself as a disease, but rather as a peripheral behavior of the person with disabilities”.
“There is no logical and irrefutable reason for hoarding. The contexts are different, and the cause depends mainly on the underlying disease with which the person begins, ”the doctor justifies.
In the most severe cases of hoarding, it often refers to “a certain negligence and inability to turn the tide.” People can no longer interact on a daily basis, lose their sense of hygiene and end up isolating themselves.
What makes a person become a miser?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and dementia are some of the pathologies that can lead a person to stockpile.
According to Dr. Marcelo Feio, older people are predisposed to becoming hoarders, often because they can no longer manage and take care of their hygiene. This is progressive behavior and the problem of garbage accumulation often comes from neglect and indifference to its presence.
Keepers may not accept help
Many of those who suffer from this problem refuse to acknowledge the situation and seek treatment, which often prevents them from living with the people closest to them. “Sometimes they have to be forcibly removed from their homes. They try to keep the person in the hospital, but this is not always effective,” warns doctor Marcelo Feio.
Case that shook the country
Serious battery situations have been reported in recent months. In Portugal in April of this year, an incident shook the country. In accordance with cm reported, two corpses of a father and daughter were found in a house in Linda a Velha, municipality of Oeiras. The state of decomposition of the bodies indicated that the woman had died a few weeks earlier, and the father had died at least ten years earlier. After some investigation, it was discovered that the woman was a miser and that she kept her father’s body in this room for ten years. The house was full of rubbish, and bleach was used to mask the putrid smell.
