Romania’s main oil company, OMV Petrom, announced on Tuesday the discovery of the largest oil and natural gas reserves in the European country in decades, equivalent to more than 30 million barrels.
The discovery is equivalent to three-quarters of the group’s production last year, according to Spanish news agency EFE.
The company invested 20 million euros in a drilling and exploration campaign that lasted 10 months, the oil company, which is 51.1% owned by the Austrian OMV group and 20.7% by the Romanian state, said in a statement, with the remaining capital dispersed. on the Bucharest and London Stock Exchanges.
The discovery is “very good news for Romania, which is still dependent on imports to guarantee two-thirds of the oil it consumes,” analyst Yevgenia Gusilov said, adding that it is also positive for the plans of the European Union, which intends to “stop buying oil in Russia”.
