President Maritimo fined and suspended for 40 days for criticizing arbitration

According to a statement from the Disciplinary Board of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), on Wednesday, the president of Maritimo was fined 3,570 euros and suspended for 40 days for criticizing the refereeing in a League I match.

“On June 12, 2023, a decision was made to convict the defendant Rui Emanuel Batista Fontes for 1 (one) disciplinary offense under the terms of the totality of the provisions of Article 136, paragraph 1 [Lesão da honra e da reputação e denúncia caluniosa] with reference to articles 112.º, no. 1 and 4.º, no. 1, letter c), all RDLPFP, with a sanction of 40 days of suspension and (…) 3,570 euros”, can be read in the FPF statement.

In statements made by the verde rubro manager at the end of the match against Vitoria de Guimarães of the 30th round of Liga I, Rui Fontes stated that “it seemed that Portuguese football wanted to have no teams from the autonomous regions” in the first division.

“We understand that everyone has the right to make mistakes, but when mistakes start to follow one after another, and when Maritimo has a different evaluation criteria than other teams, it seems that Portuguese football wants no teams in the championship. from autonomous regions. And this increasingly convinces me that this is one of the goals, ”Ruy Fontes emphasized after the defeat by the Victorians (2: 1).

At the time, the president of the Madeira emblem cited the existence of an “invisible hand” that prevented the Lions of Almirante Reis from beating 15th-placed Estoril Praia by three more points.

“The goal is to crush us along with Santa Clara. We ask you to respect Maritima. We ask that the referees and VAR have the same criteria for all clubs. There is clearly an intention here to hurt some teams and benefit others. , these others are always the same,” the maritime leader stressed at a press conference.

In connection with a lawsuit also filed in the match against Vitória de Guimarães, the island’s emblem was also fined €8,925 due to “the presence of an organized group of unregistered supporters,” a sanction aggravating the consequences of recidivism.

The emblem of the island, transferred to the II League, will have to pay a fine of 12,495 euros as a result of the match of the 30th round of the I League, which took place at the Maritimo Stadium on April 29.
