Portugal has increased its permanent population by more than 46 thousand people

Portugal increased its resident population by 46,249 last year, to a total of 10,467,366 inhabitants, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) said Thursday, attributing the increase to immigration, which offset a negative natural balance.

INE estimates that 2022 marks the fourth year in a row that Portugal has experienced population growth.

“Population growth in 2022 was driven by a migration balance of 86,889 people (72,040 in 2021), offsetting a negative natural balance of -40,640 people (-45,220 in 2021),” INE reports.

In 2022, the average number of children per woman of childbearing age increased to 1.43 children (1.35 in 2021).

Demographic aging in Portugal continued to accelerate, with an aging index of 185.6 older people per 100 young people in 2022 (up from 181.3 in 2021).

The average age of the population living in Portugal, which corresponds to the age that divides the population into two equal groups, has increased from 46.7 years in 2021 to 47.0 years in 2022.

In the gender breakdown set by the INE, the population in December 2022 consisted of 5,001,811 males and 5,465,555 females.

“The resident population has been increasing since 2019, in contrast to the downward trend seen between 2010 and 2018,” INE added.

The population growth recorded since 2019 is due to a positive migration balance (the number of arrivals is greater than those who left), which exceeded the negative natural balance (the number of deaths is greater than live births).
