Police will be reinforced in the Lisbon area during the summer due to the increase in the number of tourists and the holding of major events, namely the World Youth Day (WYD), was announced this Thursday.
The Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon Airport), the transport terminals and the beaches of the Cascais line are among the points where police facilities will be strengthened as part of the “Safe Summer” program, which will be implemented for the first time this year in the regions of Lisbon and Porto.
The Safe Summer program, which takes place annually in the Algarve, will this year be extended to Lisbon, Porto and beaches with a large tourist flow due to the increase in the number of tourists and World Youth Day, which takes place in the capital on the first week of August.
The program, aimed at creating a “general sense of security among residents and vacationers”, was developed in cooperation with various departments of the internal administration, namely the Public Security Police (PSP), the National Republican Guard (NR). , the National Road Safety Service, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority and the Foreigners and Border Guards Service (SEF).
Strengthening means, increasing cooperation and oversight are universal measures for all security forces, according to the plan presented this afternoon in Sintra.
According to the commander of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) Paulo Pereira, in the case of the PSP, the plan is to increase awareness among citizens, increase inspections and awareness-raising activities.
Replenishment of funds will be carried out mainly “in areas with high income”, namely in places of bathing and nightclubs.
To implement this plan, 6,700 police officers (Cometlis), mobile service units, drones (at major events), video surveillance systems (Bairro Alto, Miradouro de Santa Catarina, Vila Franca de Xira and Amadora) will be assigned. joint PSP and GNR patrols.
The PSP will also invest in special crime prevention operations, business security and traffic inspections.
For its part, the GNR, which has established a cooperation protocol with the PSP, will focus on patrolling summer resorts, major events, nightclubs, green spaces, and road inspections.
The Republican National Guard will also support special programs such as drowning prevention, safe tourism, safe living and visibility.
Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro, who was present at the ceremony, praised the cooperation between the various police forces, stressing that “this combination of efforts will be fundamental to enhancing the sense of security.”
The presentation of the Safe Summer program for the Porto region will take place on Friday at a session next to the Clerigos Tower.
On Tuesday, the program for the Algarve region was presented.
