Falls into ravines and run-overs: the top fatal accidents in cycling

The main fatal accidents among runners during cycling races are:

1935: Spaniard Armando Zepeda fatally fell into a gorge on his way to Bourg d’Oisans during the Tour de France.

1937: André Reynaud, French middle distance world champion, died during a race in Antwerp.

1950: Frenchman Camille Danguillaume was hit by a motorcycle at the end of the French Championship in Montlhéry.

1951: Italian Serse Coppi, brother of Fausto Coppi, crashed a kilometer from the end of the Tour of Piemonte. Still finishes the race, but dies the next night.

1956: Belgian road racing world champion Stan Okers died on the track in Antwerp.

1967: Briton Tom Simpson, a former world road racing champion, suffered a cardiac arrest while climbing Mount Ventoux on the Tour de France.

1969: Frenchman José Samin runs into a software vendor during a trade fair in Singem, Belgium.

1984: Portuguese Joaquim Agostinho knocks down a dog and falls at the end of the Volta a Algarve stage. He finished the scene and died 10 days later in Lisbon.

1986: Tour of Italy crash victim Emilio Ravasio dies two weeks later.

1987: Spaniard Vicente Mata was fatally injured by a car during the Luis Puig Cup in Spain. Belgian Michel Goffin falls into a coma after an accident on the Tour de Haut Var and dies six days later.

1988: Dutchwoman Connie Meyer collapsed during a criterium in the Netherlands.

1995: Defending Olympic champion Italian Fabio Casartelli crashed on the descent from Port d’Aspet, on the 15th stage of the Tour de France, and died a few hours later.

1999: Spaniard Manuel Sanroma suffers a fatal fall on the last summit of the second stage of the Volta of Catalunya.

2003: Kazakhstani Andrei Kivilev crashed on the second stage of Paris-Nice and died the next morning.

2005: Italian Alessio Galletti dies of cardiac and respiratory arrest while climbing Naranco in Spain.

2008: Portuguese Bruno Neves fell hard during the Amarante Classic. An autopsy later showed cardiac arrest.

2011: Belgian Wouter Weiland crashed on the descent from the Passo del Bocco, 25 kilometers from the finish line of the third stage of the Tour of Italy.

2016: Belgian Antoine Demoitier falls during the Ghent-Wevelgem race, causing him to be hit by the organization’s motorcycle.

2016: Iranian Bahman Golbarnejad suffered a head injury after falling at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, his heart stopped on the way to the hospital.

2018: Belgian Michael Goularts suffered a cardiac arrest during Paris-Roubaix.

2019: Belgian Bjorg Lambrecht had an accident on the third stage of the Tour of Poland and died during the operation.

2023: Swiss Gino Mader falls on the fifth stage of the Tour of Switzerland and dies the next morning in hospital.
