UNICEF ‘shocked’ by the death of children on a boat that sank in the Mediterranean Sea

UNICEF today expressed “deep sadness and shock” over reports that up to 100 children may be among the migrants stranded in the hold of a boat that sank off the coast of Greece on Wednesday.

“The death of children in the Mediterranean is an atrocity that will haunt these shores for years to come,” said UNICEF Regional Office for Asia and Central Europe and ad interim Special Coordinator for Refugee and Migrant Response Europe, Philip Corey. in a press note.

UNICEF suggests that the worst maritime tragedy in recent years in the Mediterranean, with at least 100 children aboard an overcrowded boat, killed many of those children as the number of survivors is still limited in reports.
