Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes was sentenced in absentia by an Amsterdam court on Monday to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin during a family party.
Promes pleaded not guilty to attempted manslaughter, and the 31-year-old’s lawyer has already expressed his intention to appeal the first instance decision.
The court explained that it “took into account the fact that the defendant was a professional gambler and public figure in order to make an exemplary decision”, noting that Promes “never took responsibility” for his act.
Promes, who has 50 games and seven goals for the Netherlands to his credit, lives in Russia, where he has represented Spartak Moscow since the 2020/21 season, and the prosecution considered it “premature” to immediately demand the striker’s extradition.
The investigation was launched following wiretapping in a separate drug-trafficking case in which Promes was accused in May of importing several hundred kilograms of cocaine.
