Portugal will try to break out of Group J against Iceland on Tuesday in Reykjavik and move closer to Euro 2024 football in a meeting that will mark Cristiano Ronaldo’s 200th cap.
The captain will start at Estádio Laugardalsvöllur, coach Roberto Martínez himself announced on Monday, in a match in which Portugal hope to take their fourth group triumph and remain outright winners on their way to the next European Championship.
After “dispatching” Bosnia-Herzegovina (3:0) on Saturday at the “Estadio da Luz” in Lisbon, the national team will live only their third duel with the Icelanders, the second in Reykjavik, after 3:1 in October 2010, in the Euro 2012 qualification, also at the Laugardalsvellur stadium.
This is the first meeting between the two countries since the final stage of Euro 2016, in which Portugal will win, while a 1-1 draw was registered in the debut match of the two teams in the competition held in France.
The Iceland-Portugal match in the fourth round of Group J of the Euro 2024 qualifying tournament is scheduled for 19:45 (18:45 local time) and will be officiated by Germany’s Daniel Siebert.
The quinas lead the group with nine points, followed by Slovakia with seven points and Luxembourg third with four. Bosnia and Iceland follow with three, finishing fourth and fifth respectively, with Liechtenstein in last place without points.
Only the top two in the group advance to the final stage of Euro 2024, which will be held in Germany.
