Faith, a social worker who sees in the victim what he does not see

When she realized that she could combine the field of healthcare with the problem of disability caused by serious accidents, Vera Messias knew that Fidelidade was where she wanted to stay. In particular, in the office of the insurance company WeCare, where an interdisciplinary team works to support clients who have been victims of accidents at work and have undergone physical, psychological and social rehabilitation.

Vera Messias looks at each person as a separate case with its own specifics. He argues that “as important as knowing the policy that will settle the claim is actually knowing the person who’s been in the accident.” Your family. its holistic context. From there, a new life project is born, specifically tailored to the needs of everyone.

“A person who has been in an accident cannot change this traumatic event in his life. But he can effectively choose the person he wants to be in the future.”

Vera recalls a case of overcoming difficulties. A young man had a motorcycle accident on his way to work. This led to the amputation of the lower limb, but from an early age he showed self-determination, resilience and focus on the rehabilitation process.

In this case, the willpower and support he received from Vera and colleagues from WeCare led to a faster recovery than expected: the young man quickly returned to work and at the same time managed to get him to agree to playing adapted sports. The young man is currently part of the basketball team of the Portuguese Association of the Disabled in Lisbon and has recently become a father, according to Vera Messias.

For professionals like Vera, nothing is impossible. The best reward that the WeCare team can receive is the open smile of a person whose life was cut short, but then returned to life.
