Brazilian footballer Dani Alves, accused of rape and detained in a Barcelona prison since January, confirmed his innocence in an interview published this Wednesday in the Spanish daily newspaper La Vanguardia.
The interview was published a week after the court rejected a new appeal by Dani Alves’ defense, which asked for his release pending trial, citing “sufficient evidence of credibility” of the charges.
“I have a very clear conscience about what happened that night in the toilets in the VIP area of the Sutton nightclub. What happened and what didn’t,” said the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player.
Dani Alves, 40, reiterated that the sexual relationship he had with a woman who accuses him of raping him in a disco bath “was consensual” and did not force her to do anything they did.
Dani Alves, accused of sexual assault, was arrested on January 20 due to a “high risk of escape” to Brazil.
Alves also claims in this interview that he changed his story several times, even stating in a video in early January that he did not know the whistleblower so as not to jeopardize his marriage.
“I was afraid of losing Joanna [mulher]so I lied. I fought desperately to save my marriage from my infidelity without worrying about the consequences that I am paying today,” he continued.
