Eurico Brillante Diaz says that Costa’s absence from the European positions “is not a surprise”.

The leader of the PS parliamentary group said on Monday it was “not surprising” that Prime Minister António Costa said he could not hold any position in the European Union after the 2024 European elections.

“What the prime minister is doing, again, is stability to continue the policy and achieve the good results that we have, and therefore it does not come as a surprise to us,” said Eurico Brillante Diaz.

The leader of the socialist parliamentary group spoke on the sidelines of a visit to work for the new Madeira Central and University Hospital in Funchal, commenting on the news published this Monday by the newspaper Público that António Costa was unavailable. take any position in the European Union after the June 2024 elections.

In response to the newspaper, in response to the news that Brussels would put pressure on the Portuguese prime minister to go to the European Council, António Costa clarified that he would not accept any mission that jeopardizes the stability of the country.

“This is not surprising,” echoed Eurico Brillante Diaz, stressing that “the PS, and in particular the prime minister, has always been characterized by political stability and continuity.”

“By the way, we saw in this confirmation of what is obvious. We have a political project, supported by the Portuguese, to reach 2026, to implement the projects and program of the Socialist Party, which is the government today, until 2026, and this is what we must do here in Madeira too,” he stressed.

ABOUT Public writes that the Prime Minister’s unwillingness to take a European position is due to “his concern not to provoke a political crisis in Portugal.” The newspaper also adds other factors, including the idea that António Costa is “100% focused on fulfilling the Prime Minister’s mandate until the end of the legislature, which ends after September or October 2026, and on achieving the goals that he proposes. , namely the Portuguese fiscal stabilization.

In Madeira, where he is in the framework of the PS parliamentary days, which take place in the autonomous region until Tuesday, Eurico Brillante Dias stressed that “stability [do Governo] is closely linked to the Prime Minister”, stressing, however, that “all governments have different stages”.
