At least 11 people were killed in a traffic accident that occurred on Wednesday in the Gaza Strip in southern Mozambique, a police source told Lusa this Thursday.
The incident occurred in the morning in the Chokwe area. The rear wheel of the passenger van burst, skidded and fell into a ditch, said Julio Nkhamussua, spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Gaza.
“11 people drowned, eight more people were rescued,” Nkhamussua said, adding that among the dead, aged 1 to 40, four were children.
One of the eight survivors was hospitalized “because of the fright” he experienced during the accident, a spokesman said.
The van driver was detained because he did not have the right to operate public passenger transport, in addition to the already existing fine and suspension from work for the same reason.
The police asks to observe the technical condition of vehicles and be careful when driving in order to avoid accidents.
The level of traffic accidents in Mozambique is classified as dramatic by several organizations.
Mozambican authorities have cited speeding and drunk driving as the main causes of crashes.
According to data provided to Lusa by the Mozambique Association of Road Traffic Victims (Amviro), on average, at least a thousand people die on the roads every year.
