Cloud of smoke from wildfires in Canada ‘completely dissipated’ on mainland

A cloud of smoke from fires in Canada has “completely dissipated” over the Portuguese mainland, still lingers over the Azores and Madeira archipelagos but tending to dissipate, IPMA said this Thursday.

The latest update from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reports that forecasts for the next few hours indicate “favorable conditions for the dissipation of a cloud of smoke” from wildfires in Canada over the North Atlantic and Europe.

“At the moment, it should completely dissipate over mainland Portugal, still remaining over the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, but with a tendency to dissipate,” specifies IPMA.

The IPMA even claims that this situation should be “completely obsolete” as of Sunday.

A cloud of smoke began to cover the entire mainland on Tuesday.

The wildfires that have plagued Canada for weeks have released significant amounts of gases and particles into the atmosphere that are carried and dispersed by the winds.

“The cyclonic circulation associated with the depression centered northwest of the Azores will contribute to the large-scale transport of these pollutants, mainly carbon monoxide, along the North Atlantic, which reached the Azores region last Tuesday, June 13,” reads the statement. message. IPMA.

On Tuesday, the Portuguese Environmental Protection Agency (APA) issued a clarification on particle levels in the Portuguese mainland and the Azores, saying on Tuesday that there was still no evidence of an impact on the surface of a cloud of smoke from fires in Canada.

Particle levels measured by air quality index classes remained between Good and Very Good in mainland Portugal and the Azores, according to the APA.

Thousands of firefighters from around the world, including from Portugal, are fighting active fires in Canada, with the province of Quebec being the most affected region.
