The chief of staff says that Marcelo is “in a good mood” and that he “called him out of the ambulance”.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was discharged this Wednesday after collapsing while he was at the Faculty of Science and Technology in Caparica. The head of state was taken by ambulance by Trafaria firefighters to the Santa Cruz Hospital in Oeiras.

“The voltage was very low,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa explained as he left the Santa Cruz hospital. “I started having the symptoms that I had in Braga, a sudden drop in tension. I left the group and tried to do the same as in Braga,” said the President of the Republic, adding that he could not get to the building without fainting. Marcelo explained that he left the hospital with a blood pressure monitor.

During statements made on leaving the hospital, Marcelo also mentioned a phone call from António Costa. “I’m sad, I’m not going to die for this,” Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said when he answered a phone call to the prime minister.

The information provided in writing by the President of the Republic at around 3:45 pm was that “the President of the Republic had an indisposition after visiting the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Nova de Lisboa and went to the hospital.” Santa Cruz as a precaution.”

Marcelo Rebelo de Souza was seen at the university by the ambulance and intensive care team from San Francisco de Xavier Hospital.

Two ambulances from Trafaria were also called to the scene, one of which was supposed to take the president “just in case” to the Santa Cruz hospital with signs of fainting.

When they arrived at the college, the Trafaria firemen discovered that the President of the Republic had passed out and attempted to regain consciousness before handing him over to the paramedics.

The first condition firefighters discovered in Presidente was a reflection of poor nutrition. Marcelo, who probably ate little at dinner, suffered from hypovolemia, dizziness, nausea, and extreme fatigue.

Chief of Staff Fernando Frutuoso de Melo told reporters that Marcelo was “in good spirits”. “He lost consciousness, but quickly came to his senses. He didn’t even want us to cancel the daily agenda,” he said. “He called me on his cell phone in the ambulance. The medical team is the same that operated on him in 2019,” he added.

In the afternoon dr. Miguel Mendez, Clinical Director of the Santa Cruz Hospital in Karnakse, spoke to reporters and reported on the state of health of the President of the Republic. The doctor confirmed that Marcelo was all right and that everything was nothing more than a “successful situation”, adding that the results of the first tests were positive and that the release of the President of the Republic from the hospital would depend on the results of other tests.

António Costa also reacted to the fainting fit and expressed his hope that everything “was nothing more than a fright.”

“You shouldn’t ask the president of the republic to slow down, it’s not his part,” the prime minister added.

“I called the chief of staff and, to my surprise, the president answered. He is in good spirits and hopes to be released from the hospital,” he admitted, before sharing Marcelo’s “optimism” about his health.

The head of state was accompanied by Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education Elvira Fortunato to attend the opening ceremony of the NANOVA Laboratory of Nanocharacteristics and Advanced Materials.

The President of the Republic attended the Universidade Nova de Lisboa male tuna concert.

This is the second time Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has passed out in public. In 2018, while visiting the sanctuary of Bom Jesus in Braga, the president collapsed after suffering from acute food poisoning that led to dehydration.

Health Minister Manuel Pizarro was already with Marcelo at the Santa Cruz Hospital in Karnaksis for a visit that lasted about 30 minutes.
