The prosecutor’s office in Madrid filed this Friday a complaint for racist chants against the Brazilian footballer of Real Madrid Vinicius Jr.
According to Fiscalía, the chants uttered by Atlético Madrid fans on September 21 during the derby in the Spanish capital are “unpleasant and disrespectful”, but since they were uttered in the context of “maximum rivalry” and did not last long, cannot be a crime.
The State Ministry agreed to open the check days after the insults were denounced by the club, the player and several institutions of Spanish sport and society, including Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
A few months later, the warden in charge came to the conclusion that these chants were added to other offensive language and therefore did not specifically attack the Brazilian striker “against the dignity”.
The official complaint came from the Movement Against Intolerance, Racism and Xenophobia in Spain, and President Esteban Ibarra found the decision to archive the process “troubling”.
“This paves the way for impunity for such incidents in stadiums,” he explained in a statement to El País newspaper.
The striker has already been the subject of comments for celebrating goals with a typical Brazilian dance, which “Vini”, a member of Brazil’s 2022 World Cup squad, defended and continued to use after saying in a video that it was “an expression of culture”.
In a game that Real Madrid won 2-1, Atlético Madrid fans chanted “you’re a monkey, you’re a monkey” before, during and at the end of the match at Vinicius Jr.
Earlier, the Spanish League had already launched an investigation into the Madrid derby in a situation that even led to the intervention of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who admitted he was an Atlético fan, who expressed regret at the lack of a “strong statement against it.” type of behaviour. club.
