More Portuguese without adequate food

According to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, in 2022 three percent of the Portuguese population could not afford to eat meat, fish or their vegetarian equivalent every two days.

The number is up from the 2.4% reported the previous year. Also in Portugal, the proportion of people at risk of poverty who cannot afford adequate food was 7.2% last year, below the 8.3% European average – a number that has also increased compared to 2021. year with a rate of 7.3%.

The country is in 21st place among the 27 states that are members of the European Union.

According to data currently released by the European Statistical Office, the highest percentage of people at risk of poverty in this food situation is registered in Bulgaria (44.6%), Romania (43%) and Slovakia (40.5%). At the other end of the table are Ireland (5%), Luxembourg (5.1%) and Cyprus (5.6%).
