According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), this Wednesday, 30 municipalities in Faro, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Santarem, Viseu, Guarda and Bragança pose the highest risk of rural fires.
IPMA has also placed more than 90 municipalities in Faro, Beja, Évora, Santarem, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Leiria, Lisbon, Coimbra, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Porto, Braga and Bragança in a very high risk group.
Other municipalities in all areas of the continent except Viana do Castelo are in high fire risk this Wednesday.
Given the weather, the fire hazard will continue until at least Sunday.
This risk, as defined by IPMA, has five levels, from reduced to maximum, and calculations are made based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall over the past 24 hours.
Since the beginning of the year, 4,339 fires have already affected 9,199 hectares of rural areas.
IPMA predicts for the continent today periods of greater cloudiness in the northern and central regions, the possibility of light and scattered showers in the mountains of the far north, and locally strong winds on the west coast south of Cabo da Roca and in the highlands.
Fog or morning fog is also expected in places, especially on the coast, and a slight decrease in the maximum temperature inland.
The minimum temperature will range from 14 degrees Celsius (in Guarda) to 21 (in Faro), and the maximum – from 22 (in Viana do Castelo) to 37 (in Faro).
