According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), 23 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Portalegre and Santarém had the highest rural fire risk on Monday.
IPMA has also placed more than 70 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Beja, Santarem, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Leiria, Lisbon, Coimbra, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real and Bragança at very high risk.
Other municipalities in all areas of the mainland except Viana do Castelo are in high fire danger this Monday.
Given the weather, the fire hazard will continue until at least Friday.
This risk, as defined by IPMA, has five levels, from reduced to maximum, and the calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall over the past 24 hours.
Since the beginning of the year, 4520 fires have already affected 9823 hectares of rural areas.
IPMA predicts generally clear skies this Monday across the continent, light to moderate winds from the northwest, strong in places on the west coast south of Cabo Carvoeiro and in the highlands in the afternoon, and rising temperatures, especially to highs inland.
Minimum temperatures will range from 11 degrees Celsius (in Braga) to 22 (in Faro), while maximum temperatures will range from 24 (in Aveiro) to 38 (in Evora and Castelo Branco).
