More than 50 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Portalegre, Santarém, Vila Real and Bragança pose the highest risk of rural fires on Tuesday, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
IPMA has also placed about 60 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Beja, Santarem, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Leiria, Lisbon, Coimbra, Viseu, Guarda, Porto, Vila Real and Bragança at very high risk.
Other councils in all areas of the mainland except Viana do Castelo are currently in high fire danger.
Given the weather conditions, the fire hazard will continue until at least Saturday.
This risk, as defined by IPMA, has five levels, from reduced to maximum, and the calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall over the past 24 hours.
Since the beginning of the year, 4565 fires have already affected 9840 hectares of rural areas.
IPMA predicts generally clear skies for the continent today, occasional strong winds on the west coast and highlands in the afternoon, a slight decrease in maximum temperatures and suspended dust in the southern region.
Minimum temperatures will range from 14 degrees Celsius (Vila Real and Guarda) to 22 (in Faro), while maximum temperatures will range from 23 (in Porto and Aveiro) to 37 (in Castelo Branco).
