China has already reached 52 degrees, and European countries – about 40. Environmentalists warn of “climate chaos”

The environmental movement Extinction Rebellion warned on Tuesday that Europe is “in a situation of climate chaos” due to an anticyclone that is pushing very hot air out of Africa and raising thermometers in the northern Mediterranean.

“We can’t stand this kind of heat. Yesterday [segunda-feira] it was the hottest day in China with a temperature of 52ºC, and scientists believe that this week will also be the hottest day in Europe,” Extinction Rebellion co-founder Robin Boardman of the Department of Environment and Climate Change told Luce. in Lisbon.

Extreme heat heightened fears in Europe about wildfires and their health consequences.

“We are not happy to say that we were right in the past when we said this would happen. Now it’s happening. If governments and people want to change the path we have to take in the future, let them join the uprising, tell the truth and make a just transition to reduce this warming,” he stressed.

The British activist added that “only immediate action can change the situation.”

In Italy, maximum temperatures are expected to be around 47 degrees Celsius (ºC) in Sicily and Sardinia and break records in Rome, where 42ºC is expected.

Spain has already overcome two heat waves since the beginning of the summer solstice in June, but this week is expected to reach 40 to 44ºC and tropical nights when temperatures should not drop from 25ºC.

According to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, this anticyclone is pushing “very hot air out of North Africa,” which contributes to atmospheric stability by storing heat on the surface.

More than half of Spain is on high alert. In Andalusia, the provinces of Córdoba and Jaén are on high alert due to the extreme risk of predicted maximum temperatures of up to 44ºC.

In France, an orange warning has been activated in the south, where temperatures can reach 40ºC.

At least 40ºC is expected in the Balkans, raising fire and health concerns in Montenegro, Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Croatia and Slovenia.

Dozens of forest fires continue in Turkey, which started over the weekend when temperatures are around 38ºC and are expected to hit 40 today.

In Romania, where today is 40ºC, thunderstorms are expected, with heavy rain and strong winds, and in Bulgaria, forecasts point to more than 40ºC in the cities of Ruse, on the Danube, and Sandanski, on the border with Greece.

In Austria, temperatures soared to 35°C over the weekend. The Red Cross even opened rooms to accommodate people so that the body could recover from the pressure caused by the heat.

As 39ºC is expected in the south, Hungary has declared a red alert level in the provinces of Bacs-Kiskun, Chongrad-Canad and Békés.
