Traffic in the eastern part of Loures municipality will be restricted and train stations will be closed on August 5 and 6 for World Youth Day (WYD) ceremonies, the municipality announced on Tuesday.
These measures are part of the accessibility and security plan of the municipality of Loures, presented this morning to the authorities of the Lisbon district to businessmen and traders, and are related to the WYD celebrations that will take place these days in the Tejo Trancao Park.
Speaking to Lusa, Loures Municipality Vice President Sonia Paixao (PS) explained that conditions will only be tested on the weekend of August 5 and 6, and on the remaining days of WYD (01, 02, 03 and 04) “there will be no restrictions on movement “.
“Throughout the week, traffic in the district will proceed as usual. There will be restrictions over the weekend, which will mainly affect the Union of the parishes of Santa Iria da Azoia, São João da Taglia e Bobadela, Sacavem and Prior Velho, as well as Moscavide and Portela,” he said.
The mayor noted that residents and merchants will be able to travel on restricted roads upon presentation of a permit.
“They can [comerciantes] supply their surfaces within what is normal and what are the predetermined schedules. There are no restrictions, except for weekends in the red zones. However, permitted vehicles will always be able to move around,” he explained.
In addition to the closing of the railway stations on the 5th and 6th, the section of the Additional Route (IC) 2 that crosses the municipality will be closed.
The Oriente railway station, already in the municipality of Lisbon, will be the nearest stop to the fence of the Tejo-Trancão park.
To cope with these restrictions, Sonia Paixao revealed that it is planned to expand the public transport offer with an estimated increase of 203 movements (54,000 seats) on weekdays and 14 (17,000 seats) on weekends.

This year’s event, which will feature Pope Francis, was originally scheduled for 2022 but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pope Francis was the first to register for WYD Lisbon 2023 on 23 October 2022 at the Vatican.
