The head of the European Commission is confident in the imminent conclusion of a deal with MERCOSUR

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday that she was confident that a trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and MERCOSUR would be concluded “in the coming months”.

“I am very confident, especially after these two days, that in the coming months we will be able to complete negotiations with MERCOSUR,” von der Leyen said at a press conference that concluded the summit between the EU and the Community of Latin American countries. and the Caribbean (CELAC), which took place on Tuesday and Monday in Brussels.

The Community Executive Leader stressed that the EU and the countries of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) share common goals, namely environmental ones.

Ursula von der Leyen also stressed that since Lula da Silva was sworn in as President of Brazil, “a reasonable dialogue can be resumed” on environmental issues.

For the first time in eight years, the EU-CELAC summit brought together 60 leaders of both blocs in Brussels.

A trade agreement between the EU and MERCOSUR was concluded in 2019, but ratification has yet to be completed due to environmental concerns raised by the EU during Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency of Brazil, as well as trade concerns of some European countries.
