Former Netherlands international Edwin van der Sar, who suffered a brain hemorrhage two weeks ago while on holiday in Croatia, has been discharged from intensive care and is expected to return home next week.
The information was provided by himself, with the former Ajax and Manchester United goalkeeper posting a photo still in a hospital bed, smiling and next to his wife Annemarie.
“I am no longer in intensive care. I’m still in the hospital but hope to be home next week and take the next step in my recovery,” the 52-year-old former player wrote on Instagram.
In May, Edwin van der Sar stepped down as Ajax’s general manager. He has held this position since 2016 and after the club’s worst season in 14 years, when the Amsterdam badge finished third in the league behind Feyenoord and PSV Eindhovem.
Considered one of the best goalkeepers of all time, Van der Sar excelled at Ajax between 1990 and 1999 when he won his first Champions League and his second with Manchester United (2007/08).
Van der Sar also represented Juventus (1999/2001), Fulham (2001/2005) and Noordwijk at the start (1989/90) and end (2015/16) of his career.
