The PSP currently monitors 134 residences across the country while the owners are on vacation. “The houses outside are guarded by police from nearby police stations. We go out several times to check if there is anything suspicious, ”explained Artur Serafim, Commissioner of the PSP.
Another problem with the PSP Safe Holidays campaign is children. “We have an I’m Here program that is completely free and consists of putting a simple bracelet on a child’s arm or leg so that if they get lost, we can access the database through the number on the bracelet and proceed to reunite with family members,” he said.
Over 45,000 bracelets have already been given away this year and there have been no disappearances so far. Since the start of the initiative in 2012, 52 children have already been “saved”.
In the past nine years, 26,654 homes have been patrolled and only 28 burglaries have been committed, equating to a success rate of over 99%. “Of course, the goal was zero, but it’s a very satisfying figure,” the commissioner said.
