Diogo Ribeiro has just made Portuguese swimming history by winning the silver medal in the 50m butterfly at the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
The 18-year-old Portuguese swimmer has already made history by becoming the third national swimmer to ever reach the final, and now he even manages to extend his feat, in the final of which he clocked 22.80 seconds, just behind Italy’s Thomas Ceccon (22.68) and ahead of France’s Maxime Grousset (22.82).
In addition to the medal and World No. 2 status, the Portuguese prodigy also sets a new national record, bettering his already held 22.93 seconds.
So far, the best result of a Portuguese swimmer in the World Cups was Alexandre Yokochi’s 5th place in the 200m breaststroke in Madrid 1986 with 5th place in the 200m breaststroke, while Ana Barros was another finalist in Perth ’91 with 8th in the 50m breaststroke.
