Judicial Police (PJ) detained a 62-year-old man on suspicion of starting two forest fires in Lamego, Viseu district, on Saturday, Criminal Investigation Police said on Monday.
In a statement sent to the Lusa agency, the SP emphasized that the man has been seriously charged with the crime of forest fire, as he was identified and detained during the operation of the Vila Real Criminal Investigation Department of the Judicial Police, with the assistance of the National Republican Guard (GNR) Lamego.
“The fires, which occurred on July 22, 2023 around 18:00, endangered a vast forest and agricultural area consisting of shrubs, maritime pines, oaks, chestnuts, orchards and vineyards, as well as several valuable buildings, which were not damaged due to the rapid detection and intervention of the population and firefighters.”
The suspect will appear before the court to determine the measures of coercion.
