Rockets, car engine explosions and Portuguese flags of all sizes gave sound and color to the gigantic holiday caravan of Timorese fans that circled Dili after the Portuguese team’s victory in Qatar.
Almost immediately after the end of the game with Switzerland, the voices of thousands of motorcycles and cars were heard in different parts of the city, which gradually united into a giant caravan passing through the city.
Long live Portugal. Long live Portugal. Porto, Porto,” some said in a shortened version of the country’s name, which appears to be supported by the majority of Timor’s population for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Despite the fact that the police were on the streets, trying to ensure that the fans obey the traffic rules (dozens were fined after similar celebrations at other games), many East Timorese took to the streets to celebrate the event.
Rockets were even fired in some places, and social media was flooded with messages of congratulations to Portugal, which have been part of the media agenda since the start of the World Cup.
The size of the long caravan was seen on the city’s main streets, including Avenida de Portugal, where all the large groups came together to form a huge column of vehicles dominated by Portuguese flags.
On some motorcycles, two flags of Portugal and Timor-Leste could be seen, with the Portuguese flags clearly predominating, they hung either on the backs of the drivers or on “hangers”.
The caravan was a show of strength in support of the Portuguese national team after a small caravan took to the streets to celebrate the victory of the Argentina national team.
Behind this rivalry is another eternal rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Leonel Messi, translated here in support of both teams.
Even though the game started at 4 am local time, many people were awake and the city began a public holiday that commemorates the Indonesian invasion of the country in 1975.
A repeat of the party is already planned, as many say, on Sunday morning, after Morocco-Portugal.
