President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Monday congratulated swimmer Diogo Ribeiro on winning the silver medal in the 50m butterfly at the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, a “historic feat”.
“The President of the Republic congratulates swimmer Diogo Ribeiro on a historic achievement in Portuguese swimming by winning Portugal’s first medal in the final of the World Swimming Championships,” reads the Presidency’s official website online.
The Benfica swimmer, junior world record holder in the course, swam the final in 22.80 seconds, setting a new national record, finishing just behind Italy’s Thomas Ceccon (22.68) and immediately ahead of France’s Maxime Grousset (22.82), who came in third.
Diogo Ribeiro, who made his debut at the senior World Championships, gave Portugal its first ever medal by beating Alexandre Yokochi’s fifth place in the 200m breaststroke in Madrid in 1986, and Ana Barros placed eighth in the 50m backstroke in Perth in 1991, another Portuguese World Cup finalist.
