Surveillance will be increased on the beaches of Cascais during WYD.

Surveillance facilities on the beaches of the Cascais line in the Lisbon area will double during the week of World Youth Day to respond to a possible increase in prosperity, as announced this Monday.

This increase in funds is part of a plan unveiled at a public meeting by the ministries of interior and defence, which aims to improve beach safety in the municipality of Cascais, especially during the World Youth Day (WYD) period in the Lisbon area.

Several structures will be involved in the implementation of this plan, namely the Maritime Police, the Public Security Police (PSP), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Municipal Police and the Civil Protection, which will cooperate with each other.

“Due to World Youth Day, a peak influx of people is expected when people will look for a place to relax and refresh on the beaches, which makes the need for adequate facilities and equipment to ensure the safety of everyone who uses this space,” Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro explained at a public meeting.

The official stressed the importance of working together, in which all parties will be involved, emphasizing the need to guarantee “security at sea, on the beach and on land, avoiding incidents like those that occurred on the beaches of Matosinhos and Carcavelos (Cascais)”.

“It is best to prevent and create cooperation structures,” he said.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, the mayor of Cascais, Carlos Carreiras (PSD), explained that this plan, developed for the municipality’s beaches during WYD, involves duplication of resources.

“Next week, which is the week of the World Youth Day, we will have replenishment of funds, both in the maritime police and in the rescue team.

The mayor explained that this 24-hour surveillance is intended to respond to the possible flow of people to the beaches at night, and that other types of means will be strengthened “whenever circumstances warrant”.

“There will be 150 in total. They will then be reinforced, when circumstances warrant, either by the security forces (PSP, GNR, SEF) or by the civil protection forces, namely the five fire brigades of the municipality of Cascais.

Comprehensive safety plans will be implemented on nine beaches in the municipality of Cascais (Guincho, Cresmina, Duquesa, Conceição, Tamaris, Poza, San Pedro do Estoril, Parede and Carcavelos), as well as in the Alberto Romano Oceanic Basin and the Tamaris Oceanic Basin, according to Cascais Harbor Master Paulo Agostinho.

The beaches will be reinforced with 34 lifeguards from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and 14 lifeguards from 7:00 pm to 9:00 am the next day, according to the captain, while the pools will be reinforced with one lifeguard each.

From the beginning of the swimming season (April 15) until July 20, authorities have already arrested 33 people after 21 police operations carried out on the beaches of the municipality of Cascais, according to information released by the Lisbon Metropolitan Command PSP (Cometlis).

More than a million people are expected to arrive in Lisbon at WYD from 1 to 6 August.

The Pope arrives in Lisbon on August 2, having scheduled a two-hour visit to the Sanctuary of Fatima on August 5 to pray for peace and an end to the war in Ukraine.
