Portugal with five guaranteed places a year before the Paris Olympics

Portugal, a year before the start of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, received five guaranteed places with a focus on swimming and four names with a “passport” to the French capital.

Chief among those who have qualified so far is Diogo Ribeiro, who on Monday finished second in the world in the 50m butterfly, which however is proof that he is not part of the Olympic program.

The 18-year-old Benfica swimmer has already completed the minimums in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, which will be held from 26 July to 11 August next year.

The latest addition to the list of qualifiers was Joao Costa, who with a new national record (53.71 seconds) guaranteed, also on Monday at the World Championships in Fukuoka (Japan), his presence in the 100-meter backstroke.

Camila Rebelo (200m backstroke) and Miguel Nascimento (50m freestyle) are the other swimmers with minimums for Paris 2024.

Thanks to the World Surf League ranking, Teresa Bonvalo knows that she will compete in the surf competition for the second time in a row at the 2024 Olympic Games in French Polynesia.

Teresa Bonvalo, 23, is even the only athlete with a guaranteed spot at the moment in Paris 2024 with Olympic experience as four swimmers make their debut.

In athletics, where the ranking gives 50% of the places, and the rest must be occupied by athletes with a minimum, only on June 30, 2024 will the final list of qualified ones be known.

However, Oriol Dongmo in the shot put and Isaac Nader in the 1500m have already reached the qualifying score required by World Athletics.

Portugal is still a long way from the 92 athletes who qualified for Tokyo 2020 as well as Rio 2016, but many disciplines will only be decided closer to the Olympics date, and others already have qualifying moments such as sailing and hunting weapons.

In collective sports, handball is still in contention for second place in a row, basketball will compete in pre-qualifiers, and football has dropped out.
