Centre-back Thomas Araujo has extended his contract with Benfica until 2028, the national champion club announced on Monday after playing for Gil Vicente on loan from the Incarnate last season.
“The 21-year-old centre-back Thomas Araujo, who has been linked with the club since the 2016/17 season, has extended his contract with Sport Lisbon and Benfica. The new contract of the player, who made his debut for the first team on December 15, 2021, is valid until 2028,” the club said in a statement.
Thomas Araujo played for Operário Famalicão, Palmeiras and Evolution Soccer Academy before moving to Benfica. The defender then developed at different levels of “incarnation” until he made his debut in the first team.
The under-21 centre-back was loaned to Gil Vicente last season and made 26 appearances, scoring one goal. He returned to Benfica and took part in the pre-season training of the team coached by Roger Schmidt.
