A fire that broke out on Saturday afternoon in the municipality of Odemira, Beja district, destroyed the main building of the Teima rural tourism shelter, whose owner told Lusa that she had asked for help, but no one showed up.
“I asked GNR and firefighters to help us because I realized that we were going to burn. valley and saw that the main house was on fire and only one firefighter was missing,” Luisa Botelho explained in statements to the Lusa news agency.
The hostess of the hostel located in Vale-Hunkal, said that she even asked for help from the operatives who had three fire trucks on the road, but they replied that they did not have an order for this.
Luisa Botelho says she doesn’t understand why she wasn’t rescued when, 500 meters from the scene, fire departments were protecting the Enigma Hotel from the fire.
On Teima’s Facebook posting page, the owners left a message for customers to report the case.
“It is with great regret that I have come to tell you that our Teima is today [terça-feira] was engulfed in flames. Perhaps one of the houses will stand. We don’t know yet. The fireman didn’t protect us. They were at the Enigma Hotel (right next door), which was even closer than we were, and rescued him. No one remembered us, despite my persistent calls asking for help. The fire, which broke out on Saturday in São Teotoniou in the municipality of Odemira, was the most alarming early day on Tuesday, covering about 7,000 hectares.
On Tuesday afternoon, more than 1,000 operatives are fighting the fire with the support of 338 vehicles and nine aircraft, according to the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection (ANEPC) website, which was viewed by Lusa at 5:40 p.m.
According to information provided by ANEPC at 13:10, there are records of 40 people treated by the National Institute of Emergency Medical Services (INEM) after the fire.
At another briefing held at 9:30 a.m. at the command post, Alentejo Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Commander José Ribeiro said there had been no confirmation of houses destroyed until that time, adding that inspection and verification work would be carried out during the day.
