This Wednesday, more than a thousand operators continue to fight the fire in Odemir, where overnight weather conditions, such as increased humidity, were more favorable. According to Vitor Vasa Pinto, commander of the civil protection of the Algarve, the fire is already under control.
However, he stressed, it is expected that there will be “a lot of reactivations” during the day, because the wind has changed direction and will “affect mainly the southern front”, which concerns the Algarve municipalities of Monchique and Aljezur (Faro district), where the flames have already penetrated.
Civil Protection adjusted the value of the burnt area to 8400 hectares in five days.
The commander also mentions that 43 people have already been treated and nine are hospitalized, and denies allegations of poor communication between the subjects.
Civil Protection reports that 1,459 people and 124 animals were evacuated as a precaution throughout the days of the fire.
1,114 operators are involved in extinguishing the fire, supported by 367 vehicles and 16 aircraft.
