Civil Protection says the priority is to prevent the wind from spreading the fire from Odemira to the Monchique mountains.

The current priority in fighting the fire in Odemire is to keep it under control, given concerns about a northerly shifting wind that, if reactivated, could carry the fire into the Monchique mountains, civil protection said on Wednesday.

“The strategy and priorities on the ground are really about avoiding the fire and keeping it under control. We are already in the phase of recovery and consolidation operations and it is important to carry out this monitoring and, above all, everything, now with this wind turning to the north, where the fire, if it resumes, can penetrate the Monchique mountain range, this is the highest priority .nationalist Andre Fernandes.

In the event of a fire at Odemire, the current focus is on the “permanent consolidation and monitoring” of the fronts, with concern for the northern front, which, if reactivated, could advance towards the Monchique mountains.

“For now, the fire has stabilized, but we will continue these actions over the next two days,” said Andre Fernandes.

With regard to this fire, the national commander also emphasized the importance of air assets to ensure the stabilization of the fire, citing that night flights of the assessment and reconnaissance aircraft made it possible to identify and verify the perimeter and hot spots, transmitted information to the team on the ground, which allowed the fire to stabilize.

[esta quarta-feira] 13 aircraft. “In addition to this fire, we still support a total of 15 incidents with observation and consequences, which, in addition to this fire in Odemir, have 1,516 operators and 466 vehicles “in different parts of the country”, but are focused on the Leiria and Ouren regions. as well as from Castelo Branco and Coimbra,” Andre Fernandez added.

A rural fire that broke out on Saturday in Odemir and engulfed the municipalities of Monchique and Aljezur (Faro), destroyed at least two houses and a rural tourism site, as well as several outbuildings.

According to the interior minister, 1,200 hectares were burned in one hour on Monday, with the fire spreading two kilometers per hour.

In the municipality of Alentejo in Odemir, there is a record of a tourist unit almost completely burned out and the first house destroyed, both located in Vale Juncal, in Sant Teotoniou.

In the Algarve municipality of Monchique, where the fire came late in the afternoon on Monday, an area of 426 hectares was burned, mainly shrubs and eucalyptus trees, as well as a few honeydron and cork oaks, according to the mayor.
