A watchdog set up to protect players on social media has detected more than 100,000 messages of abusive, discriminatory and threatening nature during the 2022 FIFA World Cup 1 in Qatar, FIFA announced this Friday.
More than 100,000 abusive and offensive comments were automatically and instantly hidden, according to the world football governing body, which created the service in partnership with the International Union of Professional Football Players (FIFPro), with more than 6,000 posts denouncing companies that operate social media.
“These data show that online offenses and aggression are a worrying issue for football players and society at large, with detrimental effects on mental health and well-being that cannot be neglected,” FIFA said in a statement.
A monitoring messaging service called SMPS was made available to all footballers from each of the 32 participating teams in an effort to minimize the visibility of hate speech in order to protect them and their fans.
In practice, the service allows you to identify malicious comments, report them on the appropriate platforms and authorities, and try to hide them from others, including victims.
On Friday and Saturday, FIFA joins the celebration of International Human Rights Day, established by the United Nations (UN), based on the message: “There is no place for discrimination in football or in society.”
In the quarter-final games of the World Cup, including Morocco-Portugal, scheduled for Saturday, the words #NoDiscrimination, FIFA’s campaign against discrimination, will also be inscribed on the armbands of the captains on the stadium screens. .
In a statement, FIFA recalled that in 2019 it introduced into its disciplinary code a “zero tolerance policy towards racism and discrimination”.
