Coach and fan of the Argentinean San Lorenzo detained in Brazil for racism

An Argentinian football coach and fan of Sao Lorenzo was arrested in Brazil for racist crimes during the South America Cup game held Thursday in Sao Paulo, official sources said today.

The detainees accused of “racist gestures” were arrested at Morumbi Stadium after two victims reported them to the police, presenting video footage as evidence.

The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat, which did not release the names of the detainees, said the two suspects were responsible for the crime of “racial or color bias” and would remain in prison at the disposal of justice.

The Brazilian press identified the São Lorenzo coach as Matías Ezequiel Ramirez and reported that he was making monkey gestures towards the São Paulo fans.

The 12-year-old boy was hit by a banana allegedly thrown from the upper stands of the Morumbi stadium, the child’s father said in a statement to the Sport TV channel.

The events took place in the second leg of the 1/8 finals of the South American Cup, in which Sao Paulo beat San Lorenzo 2-0, knocking the Argentines out of the competition.

Racist crimes are punishable in Brazil by two to five years in prison, and the law does not allow defendants to be released on parole on bail.
