Transalpine coach Roberto Mancini has resigned as Italian manager he has held since May 2019 and is on his way to winning the European Championship in 2021, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced this Sunday.
“The FIC was informed on Saturday evening of the resignation of Roberto Mancini from office,” the Italian federation said in a statement, which did not provide reasons for the decision.
The 58-year-old Mancini has no replacement yet, but the FIGC promises to make a decision soon.
“Due to important selection commitments, namely the Euro 2024 qualifiers with North Macedonia and Ukraine on September 10 and 12, the FIGC will announce the name of the new coach in the coming days,” the federation said.
Luciano Spalletti, who led Napoli to a third Serie A title last season, could be Mancini’s successor, according to Italian press reports.
The resignation of Roberto Mancini came as a surprise given that FIGC had announced earlier in the month that the then Italian coach would also manage the under-20 and under-21 transalpine teams.
Mancini took over from Luigi di Biagio in May 2018 and culminated by winning the European Championship in 2021 while, on the other hand, he failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, four years after Italy already lost the 2018 World Cup. Cup of Russia.
