In his speech at a dinner/meeting held in Mina de Sant Domingos, in the municipality of Mertola (Beja), Paulo Raimundo warned that the promises made in recent days by government representatives must be kept and that the same did not happen during last year’s fires in the Serra da Estrela, whose population has not yet received support.
“Year after year we continue to see the results of wrong policies, namely in land-use planning and forestry policy, year after year lamenting the lack of structural measures,” the communist general secretary told an audience of about 200 people. in the mining town of Alentejo in the Beja region.
Emphasizing that the fires are “not an accident, they have multiple causes”, the PKP leader pointed out “right-wing policy options” that lead to a lack of investment as “the main cause of the fire drama”. in the forest, in the countryside of the world and civil protection, in addition to the lack of prevention.
“And from here, thanks to our proximity, we offer solidarity, a friendly, welcoming word to the population of the municipality of Odemira and to all those who fought this huge fire, firefighters, professionals from the security forces, Civil Protection, the population,” he said.
Paulo Raimundo also expressed solidarity with the victims of other fires that broke out “a little across the country”, and expressed regret that the visit of ministers and secretaries of state to Odemir would be repeated with the promise of support to the affected population.
“We already know this story. We have the comings and goings of ministers, secretaries of state and others in the municipality of Odemira, everyone who goes there makes a new promise, we will resort to this program, now we will resort to that, now it will be like this, now it will be like this,” he criticized .

Today, after meeting with association leaders and mayors about the damage caused by the fire in Odemir, which started on the 5th and resumed today, Territorial Unity Minister Ana Abruñosa said that the survey of the damage caused by the fire will last until September 12, until the government decides support decision.
“It’s time to do a thorough damage survey and start getting some information and planning support,” Minister Ana Abruñosa told reporters in São Miguel, São Teotónio parish, Odemira.
In his speech, the Secretary General of the PKP also recalled that due to the drought, which he classified as “another drama” that the country faces every year, the PKP presented in October in the Assembly of the Republic a “national structural drought mitigation plan”.
“Another fundamental proposal for our present and our future, which the allies of right-wing politics have decided to reject. It doesn’t matter if our proposal was rejected, but it is still relevant, even more relevant today than when it was rejected, and we will not refuse to return to it,” he promised.
