Former basketball player Herminio Barreto, a Sporting CP spokesman and national team coach, has died at the age of 87, the Portuguese Basketball Federation (FPB) announced on Monday.
“The FPB expresses its deepest regret over the death of Herminio Barreto, a historic figure in our sport, at the age of 87,” reads a short note from the Federation, published on its official Facebook page.
The 1.80-meter-tall former basketball player first rose to fame with Desportivo de Lourenco Marques in the first half of the 1950s before joining Sporting CP, a club he joined in 1956.
Herminio Barreto was part of a generation of lions that included Armando Garragna, António Feu and Fonte Santa who won the 1959/60 championship.
In addition to being a player, Herminio Barreto, who won the Stromp Prize in 1968, has also coached Sporting in all categories, as well as Atlético Madrid, Real Sociedad and Desportivo de Lourenco Marques, in addition to the Portuguese Basketball Federation. , in which he even took the position of coach of juniors and adults.
