Severe flooding has affected the Avenidas Novas area in Lisbon.
The first alert was received at 17:55 about a water line break on a public road. We are talking about a break in a water pipe on Avenida Defensores de Chavez. A source at the Lisbon fire brigade Sapadores confirmed cm the presence of “big holes” that interfere with traffic.
Lisbon Sapadores Chief Deputy Fire Chief José Márquez indicated that the incident caused damage to the road surface on Avenida Defensores de Chaves and Avenida João XXI.
The same source said that the water in the area is completely cut off, but it will take several hours to repair the pipeline. Traffic is restricted to one direction on Avenida João XXI and one direction on Avenida Defensores de Chaves.
On the social network X (formerly Twitter), several people shared images of the flooded Avenida Defensores de Chaves.
Two firefighters-sappers and an EPAL picket – Empresa Portuguesa de Águas Livres moved to the scene.
Firefighters told Lusa that EPAL had already turned off the water, but traffic in the area was restricted.
