Croatian fans celebrate after a game against Brazil caused an earthquake

Seismographs at the Department of Geophysics of the Faculty of Natural Sciences in Zagreb recorded seismic movements caused by celebrations during the game against Brazil that saw Croatia reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.

The information was released this Sunday by the faculty, which on its Facebook page also posted photos of their seismograms showing the movements, explaining that the recorded vibrations are not typical of “real earthquakes.”

According to the Department of Geophysics of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the first recorded movements coincided with the moment when Bruno Petkovic equalized the score (1:1) in the second half of extra time.

When goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic saved the first penalty, and finally, when the Croatians won the match after a penalty missed by the Brazilian Marquinhos, the movements were also recorded.

Seismologists also say the strongest seismic disturbances were recorded in Zagreb and Rijeka, the Balkan country’s two main cities, where many fans celebrated after the game.
