Spanish Football Federation convenes extraordinary general assembly over player’s kiss

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) urgently convened an Extraordinary General Assembly (AG) on Tuesday to be held on Friday, following controversy after winning the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

It’s about Luis Rubiales, President of the RFEF, kissing player Jenny Hermoso on the lips during the celebrations of Spain’s unprecedented win of the Women’s World Cup, a situation that the player has devalued, but which continues to be relevant. was sharply criticized by members of the Spanish government, and the head of the government, Pedro Sanchez, even spoke publicly about the situation.

An extraordinary general meeting is held at the federation’s headquarters in the football city of Las Rozas in Madrid and is convened specifically because of what happened in Sydney: “Based on the latest developments that occurred during the awards ceremony (…) We want to inform you that the Federation’s internal integrity reviews are open, as are other applicable protocols,” it said in a statement today.

The Extraordinary General Assembly will begin at 12:00 local time and will be held on the petition of the regional associations of Spanish football, which held an emergency meeting on Tuesday and expressed their full support for Luis Rubiales.

Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday deemed the justifications presented by Rubiales “insufficient”, saying: “What we saw was an unacceptable gesture. The apology Mr. Rubiales presented is not enough.

In a video posted on social media, Luis Rubiales expressed his regret over what happened and assured that it was “an act without bad intentions and without bad faith.”

In statements released by the RFEF, Hermoso explained that it was a “completely spontaneous mutual gesture inspired by the great joy of winning the World Championship.” “We have excellent relations with the President. His behavior with all of us was impeccable and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude,” Hermoso confirmed.

However, Labor Minister Yolanda Diaz demanded Rubiales’ resignation, deeming the leader’s behavior “unacceptable”.
