The President of the Portuguese Republic warned this Wednesday in the Ukrainian city of Bucha that “delaying justice is not justice” and promised Portugal’s support in investigating the crime of aggression.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa visited the Church of Santo Andre in Bucha, a city on the outskirts of Kyiv, which was occupied by Russian troops in the early days of the invasion.
A month after this occupation, the Ukrainian Armed Forces retook Buch and uncovered the horrors left behind by the Russian occupation.
A mass grave with 190 bodies was found on the churchyard.
“Belated justice is not justice,” Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said after a ceremony honoring the victims and visiting an exhibition inside a church documenting the discovery of the bodies, accompanied by Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin.
Ukraine is considering the possibility of establishing a court to consider the crime of aggression.
Many countries, including Portugal, took part in this process, added the head of the Portuguese state.
“There has been no precedent for quick success,” said the President of the Republic, believing that Portugal can help make this a reality.
According to the president of the republic, what happened in Bucha “was very strong, very shocking, very inhuman”, adding: “that initial shock that lasted all this time has not lost its strength.”
“We can do it, we can support the investigations,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs replied to the appeal of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
