Portugal is ready to convert the debts of member states in support of the ecological transition, similar to what is happening with Cape Verde, the Prime Minister of Portugal said this Sunday at the summit of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).
In his speech at the closed meeting of the 14th conference of the Portuguese-speaking organization, taking place today in Sao Tome, António Costa said that Portugal is ready to “work with each of the CPLP member states to also convert debt into investment.” in the environment, energy, water, recycling to accelerate this transition.”
The starting point of this proposal is to work “on the basis of a pilot project” that Portugal has started with Cape Verde: “the establishment of the Climate and Environment Fund”, which will be formally approved by Praia in October, the minister explained.
In this project, “Portugal pledged to convert Cape Verde’s debt into investment in environmental transformation.”
The issue of the oceans, at the first level, should be the top priority for the sustainability of the CPLP during the mandate period of Sao Tome and Principe, followed later by related economic issues, “agriculture and fisheries”, and “it should become more one dimension of the great challenge.”
In his speech, António Costa referred to the mobility agreement that has been in place since the beginning of the year, acknowledging that “more efforts need to be made to continue removing barriers.”
In the case of Portugal, “last week a general agreement on social security was published, which is another element of the mobility agreement guaranteeing social security rights between all our states,” said the minister, who also praised Malabo’s efforts in the process of integration into Portugal . organization.
“We are seeing a rapprochement with Equatorial Guinea, wanting here to highlight the entry into force of a law abolishing the death penalty in Equatorial Guinea,” he said, referring to the country that recently joined the CPLP.
The CPLP, which includes Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and Timor-Leste, is today holding the 14th Conference of Heads of State and Government in Sao Tome and Principe . under the motto “Youth and sustainable development”.
