FIFA considers punishment President of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales retires from football for the next 15 years, the maximum allowed by the charter.
In accordance with daily mailThe Spanish federation demanded the immediate resignation of Rubiales, saying that the President’s “unacceptable” behavior caused “serious damage to the image of Spanish football”. The change in position of the RFEF, which supported the president a few days earlier, came after FIFA threatened to ban Spanish national teams and elite clubs from international competition if the Spanish federation refused to accept the punishment applied to Rubiales.
FIFA suspended Rubiales for 90 days last week pending an internal investigation into his behavior when kissing Jenny Hermoso following Spain’s victory in the World Cup final.
One of Rubiales’ last orders before the suspension went into effect was to ask the Spanish Football Federation to file a complaint with UEFA questioning the government’s intervention and demanding that the RFEF be suspended, which would mean that national teams and clubs would be automatically excluded from European competitions.
However, UEFA rejected the request as the disciplinary process is being reviewed by FIFA and considers the letter invalid as the president has been replaced by interim president Pedro Rocha in the meantime.
