On Thursday, 73 people died and 43 were injured in a fire that destroyed a five-story building in downtown Johannesburg this morning, the South African city’s emergency services said. Initially, the death toll was at least 52 people.
“The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Service confirms that the death toll has risen to 63. The search mission is still ongoing,” the agency said on X (formerly Twitter).
Agency spokesman Robert Mulaudzi told local media that firefighters were alerted to the fire around 1:30 am (00:30 am in Lisbon) and that among the dead was “a child who could be a deity of 1 to 2 years.”
Firefighters brought the fire under control, the building was evacuated and search operations began.
