Former Dutch goalkeeper Jan Jongbled dies at 82

Former Dutch goalkeeper Jan Jongblood, a prominent figure in Dutch football’s golden generation of the 1970s, died on Tuesday at the age of 82 from a long illness, the federation confirmed this Thursday.

“We are saddened by the death of former Orange goalkeeper Jan Jongblood. The legendary goalkeeper twice played for the national team in the World Cup final. Our condolences to family and friends,” the federation said in a statement. Dutch on social media. Twitter.

Jongblood was part of the Dutch golden years, taking part in the 1974 and 1978 World Cups, which A Clockwork Orange lost in the final, and also became famous for playing without gloves for the first time and with the number “8” on the back – in defeat from West Germany.

He also played in the 1978 final where he lost to Argentina, and his goalkeeping skills for clubs such as DWS, Roda and the Go Ahead Eagles saw him play in over 700 games and retire in 1985 at the age of 44.

The death of his son Eric, struck by lightning while he was an amateur goalkeeper in the DWS where his father started his career, and a heart attack a year later prompted him to end his active career.

Jongblud was the last living goalkeeper for the Netherlands in 1978, after the deaths of Piet Schrievers and Pim Doesburg, and also worked as a coach at Vitesse.
