The President of the Republic said today that Ukraine will be one of the items of the Council of State on Tuesday, a meeting that will conclude the previous meeting, leaving space for the head of state and the prime minister to intervene.
“The Council of State has two points: the first point is the intervention of the Prime Minister, if he wants it, because he did not have the opportunity to achieve this after the speeches of other advisers, and then the intervention of the President of the Republic, who usually intervenes, taking into account the opinion advisers and assessing the situation, now having more than a month and a half experience,” he explained.
Answering a question from journalists on the sidelines of the official opening of the Palacio de Belen Book Festival in Lisbon, the President of the Republic added that the second point of the meeting of this consultative body “concerns an international topic – Ukraine.” which “is also important from the point of view of conditioning not only political, but also economic and social evolution.”
Decreasing to say what he would say to the directors during the period scheduled to conclude the meeting on July 21, which ended without the release of conclusions, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said that “one thing is clear.”
“When you have a meeting at a certain time, you write down what was recorded and write a speech. It was written a long time ago,” he added.
When asked if he intended to speak about the commission of inquiry on the TAR in the State Council, the head of state referred to this closed session that he may or may not speak “on the various topics that were raised by the members of the council”, warning that “It is impossible to speak about everyone, because they talked for several hours.”
“I always thought there were many stakeholders. My point of view on the interest of TAP for the Portuguese people – there seem to be Portuguese stakeholders as well – but for foreigners it was obvious to me,” he replied.
This interest, Marcelo continued, “is as clear as the fact that the preliminary agreement with Lufthansa was practically closed in 2020, just before the pandemic”, stressing that the Portuguese airline “has routes that are very important for public companies” . as is the case with routes to South America and Africa, as well as to the United States.
On 18 August, in statements to TVI while on holiday on Monte Gordo beach in the Algarve, the President of the Republic stated that next week the Council of State would serve to conclude the last meeting that ended without disclosing the findings and analyze the international situation.
On July 21, the meeting of the State Council, which lasted about four and a half hours, devoted to the analysis of the economic, social and political situation in the country, ended without announcing the conclusions.
